Based in Penryn, we are Cornwall’s leading heating, renewables and electrical company: a trusted name in the county, and a company that has grown from the ground up through hard work, genuine care and a deep commitment to the communities we serve.

Our Story
Blue Flame was founded by Mark Bolitho and Paul Smith: two heating engineers with a shared vision: to build a company that puts people first. Starting out as a small local business, Blue Flame grew steadily over four decades into the largest independent heating and electrical services company in Cornwall.
Our approach is simple but powerful: invest in the right people, train them properly, treat customers like familiar friends, and never cut corners. That philosophy shaped everything about how Blue Flame operates, and it is just as true today as it was when the company was founded.
In 2024, after 35 years at the helm, Mark and Paul made a decision that reflected everything they stood for: they handed the company over to the people who had helped build it. Blue Flame became 100% Employee Owned in April 2024, with long-standing team members Matt Dennison and Grant Doe appointed as Company Directors.
A Company Owned by the People Who Run It
Our move to Employee Ownership was one of the most significant moments in our history and one of the most fitting. It was recognised nationally when we won the prestigious ‘Employee-Owned Transition of the Year’ award at the UK Employee Ownership Awards 2024, competing against businesses from across the country.
Matt Dennison and Grant Doe were not new to Blue Flame! Both joined the company as apprentices more than 20 years ago, working their way through every level of the business – as engineers, technicians, in design and specification roles, as department leaders, and eventually as senior managers. There is no part of Blue Flame they have not experienced firsthand.

We are proud to be a Cornish company through and through. Our office is in Penryn and our engineers work across the whole of Cornwall, from Truro and Falmouth to Penzance, St Austell, Newquay and beyond. We understand the unique challenges that come with heating homes in Cornwall, from rural properties off the gas grid to older housing stock that requires specialist knowledge.
Being part of the community means more than just doing good work. We support local causes including the Trussell Trust food bank, with our team and customers donating hundreds of items each Christmas. When our engineers visit customers during difficult times, whether that is a boiler breakdown in winter or a vulnerable resident in need, they go above and beyond to help – because that is the kind of company we are.
